Strengthening DNS Security in Uganda: DNSSEC Roadshow 2026

From 12–15 October 2026, I attended the DNSSEC Roadshow at the National Innovation Hub in Nakawa, Kampala. The event explored DNS security, operational resilience, and opportunities to strengthen DNSSEC adoption across Uganda’s .UG namespace.

A key takeaway was the scale of the adoption challenge. Statistics presented during the roadshow showed that only 1.37% .UG domains had Delegation Signer (DS) records in the analyzed dataset.

The discussions reinforced three important lessons:
🔹 DNSSEC adoption matters: Raising awareness and supporting domain owners, registrars, and DNS operators are essential to expanding implementation.

🔹 Implementation requires operational discipline: Proper key management, accurate DS records, secure key rollovers, monitoring, and recovery planning are vital to maintaining the DNS chain of trust.

🔹 Collaboration strengthens resilience: The .UG Registry, registrars, ISPs, DNS operators, and domain holders each have a role in building a more secure and reliable Internet in Uganda.

The roadshow reinforced that DNSSEC is more than a technical deployment, it is a shared responsibility. A DNS service being online does not automatically mean it is secure, correctly configured, or resilient.

As Uganda advances its digital ecosystem, continued awareness, technical capacity building, and practical support will be important in increasing DNSSEC adoption.

Thank you to the organizers Coalition for Digital Africa, ICANN, and Uganda DNS Forum, facilitators especially Yazid AKANHO and Alain Aina, and participants for the four days of knowledge sharing and constructive discussions.
